After the 2020 Census, the core area of the Mat-Su Borough was designated an \u201cUrbanized Area\u201d thus triggering the need to establish a Metropolitan Planning Area (MPA) to be governed by a newly established Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO). The Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is a transportation decision-making and planning body with representatives of local, state & federal government and transportation authorities. It is mandated by the federal government for urban areas with a population greater than 50,000.
